Neutralize your Personal Water Footprint

You turn off the tap when you brush, take shorter showers, and maybe you’ve invested in a high efficiency washing machine. Your car isn’t getting washed as often as it used to, and you may even have replaced your water-guzzling landscaping with drought-tolerant plants. That’s great—we all need to do what we can to save water in California.

Farmers in The Alfalfa Project’s program are conserving on a much larger scale—they’re saving millions of gallons of water each year with TAP’s highly efficient precision irrigation system. And now you can work in partnership with them, contributing to their expenses by purchasing a Certificate of Water Neutrality to offset your own water use. The millions of gallons they save can offset your water footprint.

What, exactly, is a personal water footprint?

The average Californian uses approximately 85 gallons of water each day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. That includes drinking, cooking, cleaning, laundry, bathing, household use and landscaping. It equates to 31,025 gallons of water consumed per person every year—an annual water footprint. Purchasing a Certificate of Water Neutrality for $100—which equates to 31,025 gallons of water saved—will offset your personal water footprint for one full year.

Proceeds from the TAP Water Offset Program are distributed to farmers in the program, as they invest to save billions of gallons of water throughout the project. Funds might help repay initial loans or allow farmers to convert additional acreage to TAP’s new irrigation program. Proceeds also support future water conservation projects in planning stages.

Your purchase will include a Certificate of Water Neutrality, which specifies the location of the acreage from which your water was saved. You will also receive a high quality, insulated stainless steel water bottle, and our deep gratitude for supporting this critically important program.
